license issues

i have a computer that has a version of xp on it when I try to install my;
version i get a message "the version of windows you have is more recent than
the version you wish to install...the continue button is grayed out, so I
can;t run my version....any ideas?

You need to set the computer to boot from the XP CD so that setup on the CD
runs by itself, ignoring the current Windows install.

You can do this from the computer's BIOS.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".

This means that your installed OS is at a higher service pack level
than is the WinXP Pro CD you're using. You'll either need to uninstall
SP2 before attempting the upgrade, or try slipstreaming SP2 into the
upgrade.
