Licence key!?

Bob Roberts

Hi,

A client of mine has a few win2k servers which their old
IT supplier installed and set-up for them. Two of them
are using the same product key and we wish to correct this.

They have bought a copy of win 2k server and now were
hoping to change the key without having to re-install.

My question is this:
Is there any way of changing the product key?

(I have heard that I could use sysprep - but some people
have said it sometimes affects the network settings etc.
can anyone confirm for me if it affects anything else IE:
Active Directory?)

Thanks,
Bob

You are legal at this point. You have a license for the
duplicate server. No need to reinstall the OS. Just
keep your licenses in good file system.

Okay here is what I just did, I did a right click on my computer, did
a left click on properties and did a copy of the product ID number.
Then I went to start, run and typed regedit, that brought up the
reigistry and after making sure I was at the very top, I clicked on
edit and find, and pasted the product ID number in the box. I pressed
enter and the number was found! IF the number is valid for THAT
VERSION of Windows, then you should be able to put in the new number
and reboot the system and nothing else should change.
Make SURE you do a backup of your registry BEFORE messing with it AND
UNDERSTAND how to recover from a messed up registry, BEFORE you do
this!
