In the meantime, I downloaded Tom's find, the freeware 3 release with date
August 2002, from http://adultxf.250free.com/descarge/cgenie30.ZIP.

I was going to immediately upload a copy to my web space, but am pausing
a minute, after finding my investigation of this package turned out a
weird complication.

: Code-Genie V3.0 for Windows 98/ME/NT/2k/XP
: Freeware. Freely distributable.
[3] Cgenie.chm
dated 2002-08-24 (and cgenie.exe v 3.0 is dated 2002-08-28)
: Licence
[...]
: Distribution
:
: Code-Genie V3.0 is FreeWare i.e. you can freely use it for your needs
: without charges of any kind. Code-Genie is an Internet-only program.
: It means that you cannot distribute the program in any form without
: asking us first. But you can place a link to the program (http://www.code-
: genie.com/cgenie30.zip) on your site, and we encourage you to do this
: if you like it.

Incidentally, the 2002-09-12 LFW has the exact same texts in each file,
with just the minute difference that that Help/About says "Donation-ware."
IMO the file with the more recent date governs. :( (Looks like he
simply forgot to update the other file.)

Too bad. I suppose that's why REM, for example, had not stepped up to host
this. The other day, I searched on the author's name (Adolf Szabo), in case
he had manifested visibly somewhere in Google's ken, so that I might find
an email contact address, but no go.
Actually the ware type flip-flopped (Shareware to Freeware to
Shareware). See: http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.code-genie.com

Ah, I see. During the futile searches last year, I'd downloaded a few of
the 2x releases, and just assumed that they were within freeware stage.
But now actually looking at them, I discover the ones that I have of those,
they're shareware. Conclude: Code-Genie in freeware form is a very rare
find.

Dolfysoft (Adolf S.) stopped developping code-genie about a year ago
because it didn't bring enough feedback and income. At that time
code-genie was shareware ;

It's such an extremely crowded market, text editors, hard enough to
compete even as freeware. To succeed as shareware, I believe one has
to do far more that make an outstanding product; that heavy marketing +
longevity are crucial for that goal.
as you mentionned, earlier versions were
freeware but afaik Adolf never wanted his software to be freely
distributable.

Antoine, any chance you might have a working email address for this author?
If you do, but you're reluctant to publicize it, then maybe you'll hint,
and I could go to next step (imploring you by private email or something)?

Story I found is that he'd changed the versioning format mid-stream. Below
is a chunk from the history page (copied from the chm of the v3.03.13):
| 2002-09-24
| Licence change: Code-Genie is not freeware any more.

Thanks for the date for the change to Shareware - one less mystery. :)
Incidentally, encouraged by Tom's success, I went out once again to scrape
the web as thoroughly as I could. I did /sort of/ find a download link for
the LFW (cgenie.exe v3.09.12, 2002-09-12), but not quite. I mean that it's
basically the LFW -- but that it is not in the intended distribution form.

http://empire.iwireweb.com/forums/index.php?download=14
| [...] I've customized this copy specifically for Euphoria programmers,
| and packaged it as a self extracting executable.

The config files are not as originally issued. They are altered to someone's
personal prefs. Also this is inconveniently packed up as a WinRAR SFX. I
see this only as a usable download for someone (like me) who might want
to converge their config files with the unaltered components of the package.

But clearly it does not make a good link for the LFW; best to stay with the
unaltered package.

Yup, I agree.

Thanks to the kind person who sent me an insulting message.
Even a post form can now be spammed...

Yikes, I feel guilty. :( But I promise, it wasn't me done such deed!
(It wasn't even my cat; he doesn't write insulting messages. Instead
just the sekrit cat chatter stuff. You know, the "rrrrrrrrrrrrrttttttt
tttty77777777777777777...." types of messages.)
