Hello!

I'm looking for an utility like "Character Map" from Windows XP.

Specially, I'm looking for those features:
- Can be minimized to the system tray and be opened with a hotkey
- Supports Unicode ("special" characters like Chinese/Japanese and
mathematical symbols, many fonts have them) characters
- Has an option to add my "favorite characters" (I use a lot of
mathematical symbols)

Any suggestions?

I don't know if Allchars would suit you, it seems to do a lot more than I
use it for!

I don't even know what Unicode is!

I don't know how to explain, but I found this definition:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unicode

" In computing, Unicode is the international standard whose goal is to
provide the means to encode the text of every document people want to store
in computers. This includes all scripts still in active use today, many
scripts known only by scholars, and symbols which do not strictly represent
scripts, like mathematics, linguistics and APL. "

And I found this "Character Map" utility. A bit confusing - the UI is
bad, but a very good program.

Wow, you're clearly far more into this than me.

I note that Klingon is not included; do the linux folks know they've been
left out?

And how do they propose to address modern thought without Doublespeak?

Seriously, though, I think your needs are more than Allchars can provide -
my main use for it is the remarkably handy ability to enter a string with a
couple of keypresses

It is, in fact a very powerful program.
