"You people"? Rarely does anyone from Microsoft read this newsgroup. We're
all just ordinary users here.

How can you be so sure? Reading does not leave traces.
And even if you are right, neither was Catilina able to hear ‘Quousque
abutere…’

You are correct, of course, that there's no way I can tell that Microsoft
employees rarely read this newsgroup. Rather, it's rare that they respond and
without a response, there's no effect to be had from asking a question of
them. it's still a peer-to-peer newsgroup and not an official Microsoft
support channel.

It is not a question to answer, it was a question to think about.

I don't know why it didn't work using the procedure of renaming the
extension.  I've done it before on another issue.

I downloaded the free program off the web that was mentioned on this
discussion stream.  I have it on another computer so I forgot the name of the
progam.  It changes the registry so that I can detach certain files windows
considers potentially dangeous.  Great program.  It worked perfectly and was
easy to use.  I will donate some money to the author.  He really seems to
know what he is doing.  With this program, I consider my problem solved..

Hi All,

I had the same problem opening XNK files. Here is what I did to
resolve this problem:

Create a .reg file from notepad as follows:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xnk]
@="xnkfile"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xnk\xnkfile]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xnk\xnkfile\ShellNew]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xnkfile]
@="Exchange Shortcut"
"NeverShowExt"=""
"IsShortcut"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xnkfile\DefaultIcon]
@="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE12\\OUTLOOK.EXE,
1"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xnkfile\shell]
@="Open"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xnkfile\shell\Open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\xnkfile\shell\Open\command]
@="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Office\\OFFICE12\\OUTLOOK.EXE
\" /x \"%1\""

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Outlook\Security]
"OutlookSecureTempFolder"="C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\
\Temporary Internet Files\\content.outlook\\PLSVBBBP\\"
"Level1Remove"=".xnk"

PLEASE NOTE: these paths are based based on VISTA 64bit, so you'll
need to change the paths to accommodate your version of Windows.

Run this registry script on your pc.

You also have to create a group policy for the users. Download the
Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 ADM and install it on your DC.

Make the following settings on the group policy:

Group Policy:

Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 ADM
Under Microsoft Office Outlook 2007/Security/Security Form Settings
Enable Outlook Security Mode
Under Microsoft Office Outlook 2007/Security/Security Form Settings/
Attachment Security
Enable Remove file extensions blocked as Lever 1 and add the file
extenssion i.e. XNK
Enable Remove file extensions blocked as Lever 2 and add the file
extenssion i.e. XNK

Remember to run gpupdate /force on both the DC and user pc before you
try again.

Hope this helps you as well.

Sometimes changing the extension confiuses the program.
Outlook tool is perfect if used safely

Why didn't the txt extension work?

Zipping is definitely better but if you routinely get mdb from senders you
trust, then adding it to the registry is much easier.

My safe sender sent an e-mail message to me with a .mdb (MS ACCESS
database)
file attached to my Outlook 2007 that I could not save. We tried to send
it
with a .txt extension but that did NOT work. I like the idea of sending
files zipped and then unzipping. No messing around with the registry
which
is like vodoo for me.

I just found the answer to my own question. The user cannot bypass the
"save
to disk" feature, not in SP3. I found the statement below on this page:

http://www.slipstick.com/outlook/esecup/getexe.asp

"After applying this registry fix or using one of the tools, the user
still
has to save the attached file to a system drive before opening it. In
effect,
the fix rolls the attachment behavior back to Outlook 2000 SR-1, with
its
included Attachment Security Fix. An end-user cannot bypass this "save
to
disk" behavior and open the file directly from the mail message, though
an
Exchange administrator can."

So it seems that for now, I'm stuck with having to save the shortcuts
to my
hard drive, but at least I can now access them, thanks to the
information you
provided about how to edit the Registry. So thank you again... very
much!!

:

This was great advice! Thanks! It unblocked the attachment, which
was a
public folders shortcut (*.xnk) in Outlook 2003, but now when I open
the
attachment, it will not follow the shortcut to the public folder, but
instead
an "Attachment Security Warning" message opens with 2 options: Save
to
disk... or Cancel. If I choose Cancel, nothing happens; the shortcut
simply
won't work. If I choose "Save to disk..." and save the shortcut,
then
double-click the shortcut from my hard drive, it works fine. Do you
(or does
anyone) know how to get the shortcut to open inside Outlook? how to
turn off
that warning message? As it is, my only option is to save the
shortcut
outside Outlook, which is now how it used to be before I upgraded
Outlook
2003 from SP2 to SP3 not long ago.

You're making life harder than it has to be. Have the sender re-name the
needed file to an attachment name that Outlook will allow. (.TXT, .XEX,
.LLD
.....) Save the file to disk and rename it to the correct name.

I have an attachement I also need to unblock.

I do not have ready access to the sender, so having them put a new extension
on the file and re-sending it is not an option.

This is a simple text file, it simply does not have MS's extension on the
end. Is there not some way I can receive this file? It should not be this
hard!

I looked at the instructions and it doesn't apply to my situation. Outlook
2007 blocked 2 .doc files and one .pdf file from a new sender.
So...what do I do. Asking the person to resend this information seems out
of line since there was no reason for it to be blocked in the first second
and third place. So what do I do???

Outlook does not block that file format.

Was the level1remove or level1add key added to the registry?
