Let me start again with XP PRO over X HOME

I'd already semi-asked this question earlier but was in a hurry, so I'm sorry
and here it is again.

-- I simply needed PWS which XP Pro has.

-- I've got XP HOME right now installed.

QUESTION: could I install XP PRO over XP HOME without having to uninstall the
HOME version.

No, it doesn't. It has IIS--similar, but not exactly the same.

Yes. Yes, you can upgrade XP Home to Professional. There is no
special upgrade version just for this, but the regular XP
Professional Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't say so on
the box).

Greetings --

Certainly.

WinXP is designed to install and upgrade the existing operating
system while simultaneously preserving your applications and data, and
translating as many personalized settings as possible. The process is
designed to be, and normally is, quite painless. That said, things
can go wrong, in a small number of cases. If your data is at all
important to you, back it up before proceeding.

The upgrade from WinXP Home to WinXP Pro, in particular, should go
smoothly, as both operating systems use the same kernel.

However, even WinXP Pro does _not_ have PWS (Personal Web Server).
Instead, it has IIS (Internet Information Server) available as an
option to install. This is a very different kettle of fish from PWS.

yes, thanks for the clarification. I was looking to finally get back into my
learning XML and other items which stopped short 1.5 years ago.

I could've backtracked to 98, but we can't go in reverse without uninstalling
the higher OS.....'though I've seen a work-around on doing the dual boot (after
the fact) on the NET, I'm not up for experimenting right now.

So here is where I am. I'm glad NGs like this exist and folks like you.

If all you need is PWS, why not just download it from the Microsoft
web site? You don't need XP Pro to run PWS.

Greetings --

This is because PWS won't run at all on any variety of WinXP.

Yes. Pro Upgrade CD (though it dos not mention Home, it is the one to
use). Run it from the Home system, enter Install, continue with
Upgrade.

Or consider instead using the free Apache server - used on many
important web sites - at www.apache.org
