Let me put it another way...

What device is associated with agartd.vxd. It's in the sys.ini or
registry and when i boot I'm told this file is missing and that i
should either remove the device, or reinstall it? This, subsequent to
installing a Sapphire radeon 9500 and fiddling around....
Also, why do I have a secondary 9500 display adapter in device
manager, and a default monitor in addition to my samsung monitor in
device manager. If i remove them, I'm prompted to reinstall on boot
up. See what trouble I can get myself into?

have no idea what the agartd.vxd is related to.
but the secondary display is part of the card its dual monitor/TV junk its
supposed to be in the device manager. don't delete it.
don't know why you have the default monitor in device manager.unless its
using that for the secondary video adapter now that I think on it that's
probly why its in the manager.
ok back to the agartd.vxd "it may be something to do with your old video
card"did you have a different video card in the sys before you installed the
9500?
if so you probly didn't get rid of all traces of .

Might be something to do with your AGP driver? Try reinstalling that, or
all your chipset drivers. Just a guess.

A google search shows your guess to be correct.
