What happened to the task bar located at the lower left portion of my desktop
screen in XP? I was spoiled by it in previous versions of Windows as I could
single click on an Icon while another application was open and work on things
simultaneously. Is it gone with the XP version?

Right click on the taskbar and select "properties" is the box that says
"show quick launch" checked?

I think you mean Quick Launch, the place you could put frequently used items
and with a click, viola... ! Then right-click a blank area on Taskbar, click
on Toolbars, then Quick Launch. Should now be next to Start button.
