Left shift key

When I am typing, such as an email or letter, and I hold down the left shift
key to type a capital letter, the shift key types a straight line. I want to
disable this straight line in the left shift key and just make it for capital
letters like my old computer. My old computer had Windows 98 and my new one
has XP home edition. Is there any way to disable this straight line? This is
the symbol I get......|

have you got the keyboard set to the correct
lanuage?
