I run windows 2000 with roaming profiles. When I change the mouse setting to
left hand, it changes for the current user only. I would like to boot up to
a lefty mouse, rather then getting it after logging in. Any ideas?

Sorry, I took the "roaming profiles" to mean that there was more than
one user involved and confused the issue. I would presume that you are
going to have to find a "left handed" mouse, or rewire the guts of the
one you have, or find someone to rewrite the mouse driver. Of course the
"roaming profile" could then not be allowed to switch the mouse to
"left handedness" as then it would be "right handed" so any other PC
would be righthanded. What is the worry about "prelogon" mouse anyway?
The keyboard is what you login with.

HKU\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Mouse\SwapMouseButtons: 0/1 - right/left-handed
mouse. After logon the user preferences take a precedence.

You might try a Registry tweak. (Danger, Will Robinsin! I haven't tried
this, so I really couldn't tell you if it works or not.)

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT (note the period before DEFAULT) has a subfolder called
"Control Panel" where you can tweak a couple of things not available in the
Control Panel applets. There should be a subfolder under that called "Mouse"
and an entry under that called "SwapMouseButtons". On my system (right
handed), it is set to zero (0). Try setting it to one (1).

If it works, great. If it doesn't, change it back to what it was before.
