LCD Monitor becomes total white

LCD Monitor of laptop with windows xp suddenly becomes total white. Unable to
see anything else on monitor. Can not work after that. laptop needs to be
swithched off and to be restarted. This problem comes on and off.

I've also seen application hangs that will do this but you would see the
telltale hourglass.
