power scheme in an I.T dept

hi,
I work for a very large company that has about 400 monitors running at the
same time, if the monitors where set to turn off in the power scheme option
for a couple of minutes would the company save money. Also turning the screen
on/off would it damage an lcd screen. All the desktops have windows xp. I
think it would but our I.T department think otherwise.

"A couple of minutes" is not going to save enough money to make it
worthwhile. If they are set to turn off until someone goes back to work on
them, then you might be saving some bucks per year.
Powering off an LCD screen in this manner is not going to hurt it at all.
Most laptops are set that way, and our LCD's at work were set that way also,
and we never experienced any failures.

Do you buck I.T. often? ;-)

I generally set monitors up this way, if not used for 15min they go into
low-power mode. Never seen any harm done.

Also, worth evaluating whether automatic hibernation of computers that
haven't been used for, say, an hour would be acceptable. There are a couple
of points to watch here, notably that a passworded, hibernated computer can
only be unlocked by the person who last used it, not by any user. Also it
would not be suitable if peer-sharing of data or printers is in use.

I find that a lot of users leave their computer on 24/7, and over 400 desks
this would save a measurable amount of power.

well it isnt my company, we have an idea box in our company and i thought it
was a good idea of saving money but if it was my company i wouldnt pay them
peanuts
i think im being fobbed off, or they dont know what they are talking about.

I misunderstood your statement "I think it would. . ." I thought you were
the one who thought the LCD's would be damaged. If it's IT that's thinking
that, they need to be educated. Maybe in a polite manner you could send them
links that would prove your point of saving money and not damaging the
hardware. There must be millions of links out there showing it.
Of course, they may not want to set it up that way because they feel it
would cause them extra work initially. There are some in IT that will shirk
a job if they can just to save themselves the time and bother. (Yes, yes, I
know, not all are like that!) I have worked with and for a few of them over
the years. But I'm retired now, so they can do whatever they like. Like one
of our old finance managers used to say, "It's not MY money, but. . ."

sorry tom i didnt explain fully, yes i think the same that because its extra work they cant be bothered, but it is so easy to set up. I might try the polite way of sending links without stepping on toes.

yes i thought i would save money aswell as i have said to sc tom on this
post it was an idea i had for the company i work for but i think that the I.T
department cant be bothered to set up something even though it is so easy to
do and use. All the desktops are passworded and everyone has thier own pc, so
the hibernation idea would also work.

Might also be worth mentioning poweroff.exe:

Which can be set to hibernate the computer at a specific time, if that is
more convenient than after a period of non-use.
