LCD Backlights

I keep reading about the weak spot of LCD monitors being that the
backlight burns out. Well is there anyone out there that has had this
happen? If so, is there any among you that had actually taken said
LCD apart and investigated what is involved in changine the backlight?
Is this just a series of incandescent lamps or is it some type of
flourescent lamp or what? Maybe someone knowledgable will jump in and
enlighten all of us.
Thanks,
Jim

I haven't changed one but from what I understand it's just a
thin cold cathode tube that's either hard-wired or with a
plug... and an assembly that spreads that tube's light. The
challenge in replacement would be finding the correct sized
tube (if direct replacement part from manufacturer isn't
possible or is costly) and disassembling the monitor to get
to it.

Yes, It happend after having had it for about 6 weeks so it was repaired
under warranty.
The local service centre people were good but the manufacturer took a month
to send them the spare part.

FWIW, the problem with spare parts is that many countries impose huge
tarrifs or other import duties on spare parts. This expense reduces the
willingness of repair centers to keep inventories of spare parts thus
leading to what otherwise might be considered unnecessary delays.

Any idea why they would tariff replacement parts?

There was a survey just recently that revealed the following results;

40% of women said they thought their ass was too big.
40% of women said they thought their ass was too little.
20% of women said they didn't care what their ass looked like, they were
going to stay married to him anyway.

The backlight in most of the LCD monitors is good for about 20,000 to 30,000
hours.

The complexity of changing it depends on the monitor model. It is best to
give the monitor to the authorized service for replacement. Most of the
time, when the factory service rep changes the lamps, he will also change
the ballast supply at the same time. Usually when the lamp is worn down, the
supply may also not be up to full performance as well.

It would take about 3 years of heavy use to use up the life of a lamp. I
would think that in 3 years the monitor may also have other worn pieces. My
preference would be to replace the monitor.

Most of the monitor manufactures will not sell parts, or sell service
manuals, to non authorized servicers. There are some universal type
replacement lamps that are available, but there is no gaurantee that the
replacement will be exactly matched to the origional.
