Launch files in a separate process

In Windows 2000, how do you make files (not folders)launch
in separate process windows. On my old Windows 2000 PC, I
could highlight multiple files such as jpegs and they
would open in separate process windows. The same would
ocur for multiple Excel and Word files.

To turn on Single Document Interface (SDI) in Microsoft Excel 2000
Tools|Options|View and check "Windows in Taskbar". In either case there is
only one instance of excel.exe running. Task Manager|Processes will confirm
this. SDI cannot be turned off in Microsoft Word 2000 even though normally
only one instance of winword.exe is running.
