latin letters in word and outlook XP

when opening word XP it always opens showing a latin i
on the first line and I am unable to remove it, does any
one have any ideas

The letter looks like this ì,

This also shows in new Emails that I create.

I have tried replacing the "Normal.dot" file with a clean
image but the character still keeps appearing.

I think it is some setting within word and outlook but
don't know where.

You're on the right track: the problem is almost certainly in normal.dot.
