latest zonealarm crashing?

Yesterday I downloaded zonealarm 37.193 (among other things)

My computer hung on closedown, and would not start this morning, and
zonwalarm was mentioned among all the error messages.

I did a scanreg/restore (oh, the wonder of windows) and started off a
previous registry, and did not have to uninstall ZA, but I intend to revert
if I'm still uneasy tonight; there's only so many backups.

Has anyone else had a similar experience; nearly fergot, Win98SE.

Before installing, did you uncheck "Load ZoneAlarm at Startup" in Overview >
Preferences and REBOOT?

No, it was an update, and they suggest you do it this way if you already
have it, to save your preferences.

It normally loads on boot, saves me having to remember.

Could be an idea, though, to establish if it really is ZA, thanks

Your preferences are saved if you uncheck "Load ZA at Startup", reboot and
then install the *upgrade*. After you upgrade, it will automatically be
checked again and ZA will load at startup.

The reasoning behind doing it this way is to avoid any conflicts that might
occur if you update or install on top of a running application. Granted, it
usually works even if you allow ZA to remain active. But, IMO and others as
well, it reduces the risk of problems when doing an install/upgrade.

It'd be even better to unload ZA and other nonessential programs prior
to doing the upgrade, then reboot the system and let everything
restart. If you have DSL or cable modem, then I would expect there'd
be some way of disconnecting the computer from that as well for
security reasons.

Hello Tim

I'm using AVG 6; but I've had no trouble since the first boot, so I guess
for me it was one of those damn Windows things, however I'll still never go
near linux again.

And I've not been besieged by millions of people saying "too right; me too"

Always keep tight hold of Nurse
For fear of finding something worse

I hope you manage to resolve your problems

And there was great rejoicing amongst Linux users.....
