The latest winsdows update for XP severvic pack two hosed my system. I
installed it, and when I re-booted I could no longer connect to any
internet services even though I was connected to my ISP, the browser would
just time out. No similar problem with my laptop that had not yet been
updated. I uninstalled the service pack, and then could not get into
windows all. I had to run a system restore from the C prompt in safe mode
to get my computer back.

It's a problem with Zone Alarm and KB951748, look at the thread about it in
windowsxp.network_web or visit the zone alarm support forum.

If this is your issue, there's also a thread 3 posts below yours that
discusses the problem.

Are you running ZoneAlarm firewall?

There have been reports of a conflict with ZA and the update and it seems
the fix is to lower ZA's security.

If you had Zone Alarm installed, that causes problems. Please see the
other entries about that here.

Sheeshe, lightening fast response! I'm not going to lower my firewall
security just to make an MS update work. I probably don't need the update
in the first place. When do you suppose a patch for this update will be
available? What puzzles me is why when I uninstalled the update, my system
crashed, did uninstall it improperly? I went to the update, opened the
folder, and clicked on the unistall. I'm running comodo on my laptop,
anyone having problems with that firewall after the update?

Nope, all the problems seem to revolve around ZA and file size checks.

internet completely today, Grrr

It's not Microsoft's problem, so I doubt there will be a fix.

As I understand the issue, ZA noted the size of certain files necessary for
internet connections. The MS update changed some of these files. Now ZA
presumes there's been a malicious infiltration of some sort and prevents
these (new) files from executing.

A clever, but obviously flawed, detection mechanism.

No it didn't, Zone Alarm did.

I've just installed the new relevant ZoneAlarm version 7.0.483.000,
and the outstanding MIcrosoft updates.
Everything seems to be working ok so far. Thanks to ZoneAlarm for
their swift action.
