Latest Patch

Hi all

I am receiving the following error message: ""You do not have permission to update Windows XP" while I am trying to install the latest Seccurity Update for Windows XP (KB840374). I tried to install it through the web (windows update), by downloading the patch, and by allowing it to autoinstall.. all seem to fail. There is no record of these failed events in my Event Viewers

I think this may be related to the fact that my System Restore has been disabled. I tried to re-enable it throught the MMC and restart the service, but the tab for System Restore is still missing.. I am not completely certain these are related, but the security patch seems to fail right after it unpacks the cab files (right before installation) when a restore point is attempted. There is not too much out there on the net for this issue. By the way, I tried to install the patch in Safe Mode as well and received the same problem

Any help is very appreciated as I would like to be protected!

Thanks in advance.

Make sure you have Admin rights with the account you are
logged on with ~or~ logon as the administrator then do
updates.

The domain policy that caused the problem in our case was the "Manage auditing and security log."
