Sun has released Java 1_6 Update #11. This latest version now
removes the previously installed version. A long overdue feature.
*The installer still tries to slip Open Office installer as part of the
default setup, so watch for bundled components

I think (I'm not positive) that they rotate the extra baggage that
comes with it. I know they've wanted to install Yahoo Toolbar on some
of the update packages I've gotten. Regardless, you need to keep watch
on the options screens that appear so that you install what YOU want
on your computer, not what THEY want to put there.

The "Bundle" seems to be keyed to the Operating System it's being
installed on. Most times with Update #11 it's Open Office.org installer
other times you'll see different bundle offerings. ( Home Server, ...)

I had no options to install anything other than Java on 3 different (full
offline installation) downloads for 3 different computers.

Just last night I upgraded to v.11 on Windows XP Home SP 3. Nothing else was
bundled or even offered. I used the standalone installer, which I obtained
directly from the Sun website. There was a small ad for Open Office.

Interesting - I just updated 3 physical PCs and 7 VPCs and on every
one of them I was offered at least one bundle. I also downloaded the
Offline ( full package ) installer at just over 15.9 Megabytes from this
location: http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

That small ad was the "Bundle" - which installs the Open Office installer.
Not the full program just the installer. By default that option is checked
or tic'd so it would be included with the Java RE update.

Where would one locate the Open Office installer on the computer?

Apparently it only removes .10 and above. I had one workstation with
6.7 installed and 6.11 didn't remove it.

I downloaded the offline version on one network on Tuesday and the
installer offered the Yahoo toolbar. I downloaded the offline on
Wednesday on another network and OO was offered. Both were downloaded
from the Java site. A poster in another group said he had an install
that didn't offer ANYTHING.

Normally it shows up as a shortcut on the desktop. I never checked but I'd
suspect it would have an entry in Add/Remove programs.

Well, it didn't put it anywhere on my computers. So, my three downloads for
three machines were clean. There was nothing to check or uncheck. I've
always seen the ad for Open Office.

Thanks for the info, I wondered if Upd #11 would remove earlier
versions.

Here's a question for you. New software was installed last week
(Blackberry Professional for Exchange) on an Exchange 2003 Server.
Prior to installing 6.11, I uninstalled version 5.11. I was contacted
later in the day and was told that the Java update conflicted with the
software and it was not working. I looked in the BB forums and even
read detailed install instructions and nowhere did it mention that Java
was even needed. I only saw where users talked about Java when using it
in the console, as IE is used.

Why would new software "require" a version that was over 3 years old?
The person who "fixed" it told them it was a conflict, and yet version
6.11 remains installed. I think I'm being used as a scapegoat.

I raised this issue as a Secunia report a couple of months back, after a
client computer got pwned by way of an old copy of the java runtime. Crazy
thing was, nothing on the computer needed java, it was a totally pointless
vulnerability having it preinstalled in the first place, and the fact that it
constantly nagged and nagged for updates actually made it no more secure,
becase a webapp can specify which of several installed runtimes to use.

Of course I probably was not the only one to raise the issue.

Actually...no. I know this because I clicked all over the ad, just to see if it was clickable. It was not clickable.

I updated to #11 yesterday and verified that the previous version #10
has been removed. However, the plugin for #`10 in Firefox is still
there. Should I disable it manually. There is no provision in Firefox
for removing it.
Thanks in advance.

Did you have FF open when you ran the update?

I just installed the latest update (jre-6u11-windows-i586-p-s.exe) with
Firefox 3 closed. When I restarted Firefox I found that a new add-in "Java
Quick Starter" has been added to Firefox.

What is this and why would I need this new add-in? If I uninstall it will I
still have Java capability in Firefox?

Thanks.

Hi Jeff,

Like other programs (Adobe is a good example), Java has now implemented
the "Quick Starter", that loads a portion of the code into memory JUST
IN CASE you happen to use it. I find that the devs of these programs
think that by pre-loading, the user will think the program is actually
faster! They must think everyone is a bunch of dummies that don't know
what is going on.

Yes, I believe you can disable or uninstall it in FF if you find it is
slowing down your system.

In case anyone else needs to know how to do this, the answer is through XP's
Control Panel, click on Java, then advanced, then miscellaneous and uncheck
the Quick Starter box. Then apply. Firefox needs to be closed.
