Latest Internet Explorer 7 Versions for XP SP3 and Vista?

C

ColTom2

Hi:

Apparently there are two different latest versions of Internet Explorer 7.
One for XP SP3 and a separate version for Vista.

Can anyone tell me the latest IE7 versions that apply to both XP SP3 and
Vista?

I thought XP SP3 was version 7.0.5730.13 and did not realize that Vista
also has apparently a different latest version.

If anyone can clarify these IE7 versions for me I will be most
appreciative.

Thanks,

ColTom2

In another thread, you told us that you'd uninstalled v7.0.5730.11 in WinXP
and then installed v7.0.5730.13. There is one difference of any substance
between those versions: Installing the latter does not require Validation.

If your machines are fully patched, the true "latest versions" of IE7 (i.e.,
%system%\ProgramFiles\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE <=this file) would be
v7.0.6000.16640 in most 32-bit versions of WinXP SP2/SP3 and v7.0.6000.16643
in most 32-bit versions of Vista.

Expect this to change with the release of the next Cumulative Security
Update for IE, expected to be released on 10 Jun-08.

Hi PaBear:

Are you saying because I manually ran the IE7 version 7.0.5730.13 to
upgrade from Build 11 and it did not require validation then it is
considered not fully patched. And with the Security Update due out tomorrow
10 June 08 that it will change my version of IE7 for 32 bit to version
7.0.6000.16640?

I have all known updates now installed....as far as I know and according
to Belarc Advisor. Thanks for helping keeping me straight.

I did not say that, and you didn't upgrade from v7.0.5730.11 IIRC, you
uninstalled v7.0.5730.11 and then installed v7.0.5730.13.

As of this post: If the most recent IE update (i.e., KB947864, released 08
Apr-08) is installed, %system%\ProgramFiles\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE
<=this file will be v7.0.6000.16640. If it's not, the machine is not fully
patched and you're not running a fully patched version of IE7.

file version and the version displayed in IE7 Help | About!

Please my prior posting Subj: Latest Version Build IE7, dated 6.8.2008
8:07PM and subsequent threads a few lines down.

From what you have said I'd almost bet you that you have Google Earth
installed and have made updates to it. In running the updates you most
likely did not know that Google installed Google Updater which has prevented
you from getting any Windows Updates since your IE7 version 7.0.5730.11. You
currently have what is know as a "Branded IE7".

If this is the case then read my last posting and it will tell you how to
update from Build 11 to Build 13 and start getting IE7 updates again.

Please let me know if you do have Google Earth installed etc.

Yet I have all Windows updates, including SP-3 (just applied yesterday
and checking for any updates thereafter), on Windows XP Professional
32-bit and my version of Internet Explorer is 7.0.5730.11 as reported
under its Help -> About menu (versus the version number of some .exe or
..dll file separately of the other files). Maybe the 5730.11 and
6000.16640 versions are for the Media edition of Windows XP. Or you are
looking at file versions rather than the program version.

Hi PaBear:

You are right in saying that I did not upgrade from Build 11 to Build 13
per se. I installed Build 13 which in the installation process uninstalled
Build 11 and installed Build 13. I guess my usage of words in trying to say
that I went, not upgraded, from Build 11 to Build 13. My selection of words
no doubt could have been better, as you so appropriately outlined.

Please help me clarify further. I am fully patched and have KB947864
installed on 08 Apr 08. And if I go to iexplore.exe it currently is version
7.0.6000.16640. Now this is where I get lost with terminology of versions,
as you so adequately described in not getting lost with the version of
iexplore.exe and IE7>Help>About.

Which of these two sources is considered to be the normal source as
describing what version of IE7 does one have?

I really appreciate your bringing all this to light and hopefully you can
further enlighten me as to why the difference in versions when one speaks
about what is the IE7 version. I understand that the version for file
iexplore.exe is 7.0.6000.16640 and for IE7>About is 7.0.5730.13. I guess
what I am trying to get at is what I asked above....which is appropriate in
describing what is the version of IE7.

Thanks,

ColTom2

Glad that you now understand the discussion about file version versus
program version.

However, if you go to Help>About and it indicates you have version
7.0.5730.11 you still need to do as I outlined in my previous posting Subj:
Latest Version Build IE7 dated 8 Jun 08 8:07PM.

Basically you need to uninstall Google Updater through Add/Remove Programs
and download and install Build 13 from
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8a30-081805b2f90b&displaylang=en#RelatedLinks.
Be sure and close out all open programs and disable your Anti-Virus and
Spyware programs before install.

Unless you do the above it will not show any IE7 updates through Windows
Update. After you accomplish the above you will get an auto update to this
Build 13 install that you would not get otherwise.

You do have Google Earth installed and have made updates to it haven't
you?

Ah so, I see. It *is* the file version that is being discussed and not
the program version. While IE7 reports its product version is
7.0.5730.11, I *do* have version 7.0.6000.16640 of the iexplore.exe
file.

FYI Windows XP Pro is the basic operating system in Windows XP MCE(2005).

The Google Toolbar is the cause that you still have version 7.0.5730.11 and
you need to uninstall it then if you have already have uninstalled the
Google Updater. One or the other or both can apparently cause thus problem.

A link to a Google Groups copy of the thread would be easier to follow.
Was http://tinyurl.com/6nd226 the one you are talking about? If so, I
noticed there that you *did* divulge that you are using Windows XP
Media Center Edition (MCE). That is probably why you have a version
different than what I can get for Windows XP Pro.
From what you have said I'd almost bet you that you have Google Earth

Don't have Google Earth. Don't have Google Updater. Don't use a branded
version IE (which comes from either the install CD for Windows or
downloaded only from Microsoft). Don't see how any of these would mask
out entries from the Windows Update web page.

Your analysis in the other post to which you refer is inconclusive. It
doesn't provide that Google said:
If this is the case then read my last posting and it will tell you how
to update from Build 11 to Build 13 and start getting IE7 updates
again.

Please let me know if you do have Google Earth installed etc.

I do have the Google Toolbar installed (but with the tracking options
enabled so their links don't back through their servers and with
bookmarks disabled to prevent connecting to them in an attempt to
synchronize my local bookmarks with those stored on their service).
However, after installing anything Google, I always get rid of their
updater. They try to install it with all their apps but it is required
for those apps to run.

As a test, I started IE7 in its no add-ons mode which disables all
add-ons. However, Microsoft is so enamored with ActiveX that it is
required to use their update site. That means that I need to leave
add-ons enabled so their AX control (the old one or one they want to
download) will execute. So I disabled all Google add-ons in IE7 and
tried the Windows Update site again. I could then do a Custom scan for
updates. No further updates were offered, so according to their update
scan, I have the latest version available for the OS and service pack
level that I'm using.

You are running the MCE version of Windows XP. I'm running the Pro
version of Windows XP. It is common for different versions of the same
program to be available in different versions of the OS. Some versions
of IE aren't even installable in older versions of Windows; for
example, I believe that IE6 is the last version you can install in
Windows 98. It is very possible that the latest version of IE7
available for Windows Vista is later than the latest version of IE7
available for any version of Windows XP at any service pack level.

I have another license of Windows XP Pro SP-3 (fully updates) in a
virtual machine (VMWare Server). It also has the 5730.11 version. I
used the Microsoft download link that you provided in your other post,
which goes to:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...8a30-081805b2f90b&displaylang=en#RelatedLinks

After the install of that download, IE7 then its version got bumped up
the minor update to 7.0.5730.13. So the Windows Update site is not yet
profferring the .13 minor update. I've read that some users are having
problems with the .13 minor update: Adobe Flash and WordPress cause IE7
7.0.5730.13 to crash, and old security patches won't install (but it is
unclear if that is an SP-3 or IE7 7.0.5730.13 issue). I'll wait until
Microsoft chooses to add the .13 update to the WU page, so I reverted my
VM back to its snapshot that has the .11 minor version.

So what must-have changes are in the .13 version versus the .11 version?
I haven't yet found a changelog that tells me what .13 changed from .11.
From Googling around, the only changes that I see mention (but these are
not Microsoft sites for that info):

o WGA Removed
o The menu bar is now visible by default
o The Internet Explorer 7 online tour has updated how-toÿs. Also, the
´first-run¡ experience includes a new overview
o Weÿve included a new MSI installer that simplifies deployment for IT
administrators in enterprises

WGA is laughably easy to disable. No update for IE7 was needed for
that. Took me maybe 8 seconds to figure out how to get the Menubar to
show up after installing IE7. Oh joy, more boob fluff: a tour, like
that's so important. If the MSI installer had such an update, it should
be offered separately of IE <any version>. Before the .13 update to
IE7, msiexec.exe reported its version was 3.01.4001.5512. After the .13
update, it still reported the same version.

I disabled all my IE7 Add-ons and it had no effect as you indicate. My only
resolution was to uninstall Google Updater and then reinstall IE7 which
resolved all my problems.

Enjoyed your input.

Yes, but still does not obviate that slightly different (minor) versions
of software will target the slighty different versions of a base OS.
However, without knowing WHICH version of Windows XP you were
discussing, you might've been asking about Windows XP Pro x64 which is
derived from Windows 2003.
The Google Toolbar is the cause that you still have version 7.0.5730.11

As mentioned, the BHOs for Google Toolbar were disabled. They would
affect no behavioral changes in IE7 when disabled.

Also mentioned was that I did your testing in the Windows XP Pro SP-3
install within a virtual machine. What I neglected to mention is that
nothing Google is installed in that VM. Yet no update to IE7 was
offered via the WU web page. My VM copy of Windows XP Pro is pretty
clean: base install of Windows XP Pro, yesterday updated to SP-3, Avira
AntiVir and Online Armor (firewall + HIPS) since it still can connect to
the Internet through bridging to the host OS), and the only other
software installed is Adobe Reader for some .pdf files that I encounter
when using the VM to test new software. During the WU visit, the
firewall and its HIPS features and the anti-virus program were disabled.
I use the VM for software testing because it gives me a very clean
system on which to test, and after the testing is over I can then
snapshot back to my baseline and clean setup of Windows XP Pro SP-3.

Hi---repeat of a message I just wrote, but do not see posted.
MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE! I have joined this forum but cannot post a new thread.
Only seem to be able to post a reply. The management is friendly and
"helpful," but keeps referring me to higher levels of help.

All that is going on is when I try to post a new question, the page reloads

Got a clue?

I can't take it anymore! You're peddling nothing but FUD in these posts,
Tom.

Older versions of Google Toolbar or Google Earth (both of which include
Google Updater by default) is/was the most likely cause of your problems
(whatever they were), not IE v7.0.5730.11. Others experienced similar
issues...but only AFTER installing KB947864.

All you really had to do was uninstall the older Google add-on and then
reinstall using a fresh download. There was NO need to remove v7.0.5730.11
and then install v7.0.5730.13 (or overinstall v7.0.5730.13)!

Hi, Donald.

IEXPLORE.EXE v7.0.6000.20772 is the SP2QFE (Quick Fix Engineering) branch
version in 32-bit WinXP SP2 and WinXP SP3 with KB947864 installed.

IEXPLORE.EXE v7.0.6000.16640 is the SP2GDR (General Distribution Releases)
branch version.

[Source: File Information tables of http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947864]

Very generally speaking, Windows Update will offer you the QFE branch
version if an earlier hotfix (not a true update) had been installed.

What's a hotfix? See the description here:

Did you mean to say if it's not v7.0.6000.16640(Or Higher)?

Well, yes! And chances are it *will* be higher after installing the IE
update that MS is planning to release later today (cf.

Thanks Bear,

Yes I understand that, just thought it would help to clear up why one fully
patched Windows XP SP3 would have a different version number for
iexplorer.exe than another fully Patched version of Windows XP SP3. And of
course that depends on whether the Package Installer chooses the QFE or GDR
branch of KB947864 to install.
