Latest definitions fail to install.

If I went to Windows update now, the scan would show I have blocked a
critical update. If I release the update, the latest definitions update for
Defender, it will show as 0 kb already downloaded.

If I allow install, it will record as installed successfully.

Then a shield will appear near the clock and ask to download the latest
definitions. If I agree, the download will occur very quickly (suspect it's
discovering a previous download) and install successfully.

Then a shield will appear near the clock and ask to download the new
definitions.
I take the checkmark out of acceptance and check never show me again.

From this I conclude I have a download that will not install.

Does anyone know how I can get rid of it so that I can try again?

Thank you.

I've seen posts on similar topics, and the recommendation has been to
download a manual definitions insraller, with link. I'm going to try that,
will post again if it works.

Thanks again.

Just checked.
Cycle repeats as described after downloading and clicking on the manual
install.

I still have the 1436 definitions. The 1452 will not install.

Hi,

Try this:
Go to Start/run.
Copy and paste this whole line: ( with ")
"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -RemoveDefinitions -All

then:
"C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate
Let me now it worked for you.

Not much help I'm afraid. (I'm using XP fully updated, by the way.)

The first text ran quickly, the second slowly.

When I tried to open Defender I received a 0x8050800d error.

A shield appeared and asked to download the 1436 definitions.

I agreed and downloaded and installed the 1436 definitions.

I have the shield back in the systray asking to download 1436 again.

I also have Defender in the systray with a ! in an orange circle to tell me
I'm back to definitions 1.0 again and should get an update.

But before I can get the program to open I get 2 copies of that 0x8... error
to click Okay on.

Feel like I've regressed. Closing down everything until I receive word.

What happens when I "schreef"? You "wrote" but I "schreef" after my first
post.

Anyway, did as requested. msicuu2 ran and closed.

Received the 0x8 error 3 times while opening Defender.

Clicked the update button and a download appeared to be happening (I have
Netmeter) but the result when it stopped was another repetition of the 0x8
error.

By the way, after posting a shield popped up asking to install the 1410
update.

Is the next step using msicuu to remove Defender and reinstall?

Hi Anton,

I am Dutch and puzzled, but i think you are right!
Use the same tool to get rid of WD and Do a new Install.

That is one hardy program!

I used msicuu2 on it and nothing happened.
Except maybe that uninstall was deleted. Because when I went looking for it
in add/remove there was no uninstaller.
So I went to the folder in Program Files to get rid of it.
Some of the individual files would not delete.
So I used a program called Unlocker on it. Took 3 reboots, but I removed
all the files.
The I ran Registry Mechanic and CCleaner to get rid of leftover registry
entries.

CCleaner, by the way, had found some gcas entries from Microsoft Antispyware
which XP restored on reboot even after I installed Defender. This time they
disappeared. May be an indication that Anti-spyware should be removed before
installing Defender.

So I reinstalled Defender with the machine as clean as I could make it.

Had exactly the same error as before, with the same error message. Will not
update definitions. In fact, now the program won't start.

Unless there's another avenue, I think I should give up on Defender for a
while.

Hi Anton,

ok can you remove all again the same way you did before and then
Download this program:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/regscanner.zip
Search for Defender and Giant and delete all items found.
Then close Your AV for the moment and try a new install.

Okay.
Program downloaded. Be a while before I can try it, though. Will post
again when the experiment is complete.

Anton:
Please check in Program files>Windows Defender and see if you have 18 files
, including MSASCui that looks like a castle.

Looks like that worked!

I uninstalled with YourUninstaller 2006, and it found 100 registry entries
the regular uninstaller missed.

Then I used Regscanner and found 20+ more, with most for Giant Company, but
some for Defender as well. I saved a list of the ones for Giant; forgot with
Defenfer.
May or may not be significant, but I had used Giant before Microsoft bought
the company. Free version or trial version, forget; had uninstalled before
installing Microsoft anti-spyware.

Then I rebooted and installed.

The updates in the program would not work. But Windows update did work.

So now I do have 1452 installed.

I'll post again if I run into any more problems.

Thank you!

Yes, exactly 18 files, including MSASCui.exe.

Sorry, I don't remember what the prior installation looked like.

As noted in the other thread, this one works.

Hope this is helpful.
