Last good configuration hijacked my graphics - how to get them back?

I had an issue with my computer which I resolved by going in under
'last known good configuration'.
Unfortunately that configuration reset my graphics so that now its
operating under 4 colors and the lowest resolution.

So when I go in normally, it thinks my latest state is that ugly basic
graphics setting!
The only way I can get the graphics back is to go under 'safe mode
with networking' - that works fine.
I don't want to hit F8 and work unde safe mode forever... Can anyone
tell me how to instruct XP under normal mode to revert back to the way
it used to work so I don't have to use safe mode?

Thanks

Download and install the latest video card driver from the video card
hardware manufactuer's web site.

Using Last Known Good probably means that you had problems, and it sounds
like with the video driver.

You'll probably want to try reinstalling the (correct) video drivers and
then you will be able to set the resolution and colour depth as you wish
(within the limits of the card, driver, and monitor).

But the video card driver is already installed. Thats why it works
100% fine in Safe Mode + networking.
I want to tell XP to use that configuration when it goes into normal
mode - I want THAT to be the default state.

Why would going to last known good configuration screw everything
up... what a 'feature'...

In Safe Mode - it is using DEFAULT windows drivers..

Download the LATEST video driver from the video card manufactuer's web page,
install it (not in Safe Mode for any of that) and reboot and set your
settings.

Trust me. 95% chance that *will* fix the issue as you have presented it.

You likely have one of three chipset of video adapters...
Intel, ATI or NVidia... Go get the appropriate driver from the appropriate
manufacturer and reinstall...

And 'last known good configuration' is not the NORMAL way to roll back your
system... System Restore is. There is a difference.

The problem is I disabled the system restore service way back. Now I
see the benefits of having that service around, even if some say it is
a hog on resources. Anyhow I did what you suggested and got the
drivers from Saphire, and everything is almost back to normal - I have
some issues with audio drivers to fix. Its been an interesting
experience. Thanks for all the advice.

It's not a system resource hog.
Whomever told you that is wrong.

Set it to about 1GB of space and let it do its thing.

System Restore is not a hog on resources. What it is is a very useful
facility. Whenever Windows breaks, 99.9% of the time a roll back using
System Restore will fix it.

For those rare occasion when it doesn't then your backup comes into play
(you do have a full backup?).
