LaserJet 5N Toner Sticking to Drum

Having an issue. After using my LJ5N and then shutting it down for a while,
a hardened strip of toner appears on the imaging drum at the contact point
of the transfer roller and imaging drum. There is no toner anywhere else but
stuck to the drum at this point.

Both the toner and transfer roller are NEW. Is one of them bum? Which one?

Hi Steve, when you say you shut it down for a while, how long was that?

If there is toner on the drum it is almost certainly there because the wiper
blade in the cartridge has failed to clean the drum. I have never seen a
transfer charge roller deposit toner on the drum, there shouldn't be enough
toner on the roller to do that. My belief is that the wiper blade has failed
and this is not uncommon in cartridges that are old (2-3 years or more
roughly). Are you sure the toner cartridge is fresh? Some suppliers have these
older cartridges on their shelves for long periods of time.
Transfer charge rollers have very long lives, depending on the model anywhere
up to or longer than 350,000 pages. For this model I would guess at least
50,000 pages. I assume the new roller is a genuine HP (Canon) roller, all
compatible rollers are not created equal but I still think it is the cartridge.
