Laser printers lifetime

Just took delivery of a Brother HL-2170W monochrome laser printer.
Curious as to whether or not it should be left on 24/7. A Google search
was inconclusive since many of the postings were either very dated or got
off topic.

Discounting electrical consumption is it better or worse for the printer
to be left on 24/7 as opposed to shutting it down each day after use.

As a footnote the old HP inkjet it replaced was on 24/7 and outlast two
computers.

Turn it off when not in use. We've got a Samsung laser printer that was
several years old before we moved several years ago. -Dave

Dunno the specifics of that printer, but if it is Energy Star certified,it
should use minimal power in standby.

I had an Epson that lasted about 8 years and now a Panasonic that's 5 years old
and still going strong. Both were left on 24/7.

I have an IBM 4029 laser printer that I bought through the employee
purchase scheme in 1993, just before the printer division became
Lexmark. It's on 24/7, used every day and is still on its original
toner cartridge. The electronics take only minimal power unless it's
actually printing.

Just like the other poster said, check to see if it is energy-star
rated. At home I've got one that is and one that isn't, and it makes a
big difference.

My concern isn't that of energy efficiency. Greater concern is the
durability of the components.

Besides wasting electricity, whats the point of leaving anything
turned on when not in use and wont be used for hours, like at night.
And if you live where there are lightning storms, that's yet another
reason to shut it off. I never understand the reasoning of leaving
the computer or the printer on. Electronics do go bad, expecially
capacitors from being powered up. Years ago it was stated that hard
drives wore out faster from being turned on and off, but back then,
they had to be parked manually. That's all history now, and I can
guarantee that the mechanical (motor, bearings, etc) will wear out
faster if they run all the time. It's just like a car. The engine
wont wear out if it's not running. I never leave any computers or
their accessories running unless I plan to use it in an hour or so.
In my case I do care about conserving electricity, both for
environmental reasons and my wallet.
