I have a firewire 2 port pcmcia cardbus and the laptop isn't recognizing it
when I put it in.

Did a driver disk come with the card ?? Have you checked the manufacturer's
website for an answer ?? Post what type of PC Card it is and someone will
help you.

I too have the same problem on XP with a modern laptop (P4). The cardbus
controller does not seem to recognise that anything is there when I insert
the card. On my friends laptop it immediately requests the software. (Which I
have installed on my laptop.)

I'm wondering if my controller hardware is faulty or if I need to updat
drivers on the controller? When I try and do the latter through control
panel, it tells me the latest driver is installed.

Try this hotfix;
'IEEE 1394 Network Adapter ' (http://tinyurl.com/e2nhj)
