laptop won't hidernate/standby

I bought win xp pro to install on my laptop which came
win xp home. when i first installed it would hibernate
and standby just fine. a couple months ago i decided to
do a fresh install to help get rid of spyware. now when
it tries to hibernate it gets to the "preparing to
hibernate" screen and freezes. when it tries to stand by
the screen turns off but the computer won't. i've tried
installing windows a few times more with no success. what
can i do to fix this.
 
go into modem properties and uncheck'allow this device to
bring computer out of standby'''''''''''''
