Laptop will not boot up

Q

I have a laptop win XP but no upgrades. Suddenly it will not boot up. The
screen stays black when switched on whether on battery or mains. Any ideas
welcome.

If you have a desktop monitor available try connecting it to the monitor
output on the laptop( you will have to switch to external monitor - usually
the function key + F4) If it works on the external monitor then the video
card is ok and the problem is in the laptop LCD. If this is a dell laptop
they have some models with a backlight that goes out prematurely.

I don't want to be awful but my son had the same problem with his Acer
laptop.
It was a motherboard fault and the cost of repair was more than a new
laptop.
Needless to say we never bothered with the repair.

The two green lights come on when connected to the mains. But in both mains
and battery the screen stays completely dead and black from the start, no
bios details or even a flicker. I have not tried connecting to an external
monitor, but it is worth a try.

I suspect this is the case here. It is a friend's laptop and I have already
advised him to ditch it and buy a new one. I fear that a three year old
laptop that goes pear shaped will always be uneconomical to repair unless
you can do it yourself. :-(

If the screen goes black at just the start it could be a problem related to
graphics card or RAM. also notice if ur system shutsdown or just the screen
goes black and hdd activity keeps going on
