Any comments as to good or bad issues with upgrading a laptop from Home to
Pro? Eg. which compies appear to offer the needed drivers? I am looking
at HP and Toshiba. Need a laptop that will offer at least the option of a
future upgrade.

Thanks

Order a Dell notebook and you can get XP Pro for
less than $60 preinstalled. Dell has a 25% discount
sale going on today! Visit http://www.dell.com/.

No contest - buy the Toshiba.

How big a kickback does Dell give you for advertising you provide them
here?

Boy are you setting a horrible example. I realize that MVPs aren't MS
employees, but you still shouldn't spout out buying advice and then
user your MVP signature. It makes it looks, to novices, like MS
promotes this brand above others. You should know better.

There are no driver differences between Home and Pro. The two are the exact same
operating system.

The difference are in the abilities. Professional allows connecting to a Domain
(among other things). In any case, most home users would not be able to take
advantage of the Pro edition, hence Windows XP Home Edition.

I am always dubious about upgrades on HP machines; Toshiba are pretty
standard, but even there I would check their site for advice on any
possible problem with a specific model

You should have no problems at all upgrading a notebook from XP Home
to XP Pro. I have upgraded several here in our office and have never
had to install any new drivers. The driver architechiture AFAIK is the
same for both variants of WinXP. XP Pro is worth the price just for
the Remote Desktop option alone.

There is absolutely nothing horrible or wrong with recommending hardware or
software by any person [MVP or otherwise] posting to the peer support
newsgroups. In fact I will go on record saying that I feel like Dell laptops
are the worst laptops I have ever used. I would recommend the Fujitsu with
the crystal screen.
The OP was asking for suggestions, what were we supposed to say? Yes I have
an opinion, but "NobodyMan" doesn't want me to tell you?

I'm going to be really brave and not vet this answer ahead of time with
NobodyMan, too (and I've been the subject of his lash before!):

To the OP:

1. If you are thinking about buying a laptop, it is probably easier and
cheaper to buy one with Pro already installed.

2. If you can examine the laptops you are considering in person, do so.
Laptops are very personal and you should get the one that feels nicest
to you and has the features you want. Compare the hardware and
preinstalled software bundles.

3. Look on the mftr.'s website and see how easy it is to navigate and
how accessible their tech support is. Remember that if something goes
wrong with the laptop, you'll need to be dealing with the mftr.'s tech
support.

And here's my big, bold statement: I love my ThinkPad.
