Connect laptop to desktop by way of eithernet or usb
ports. Turn on Laptop and desktop. How can get an icon
for the laptop on the desktop of the desktop, and vice
versa? What 'key' will activate the action?

What do you mean - icon? Are you trying to network the two computers? Did

It sounds like the OP wants to map the laptop drive to the desktop,
and the desktop drive to the laptop. It's do-able:

Make sure both systems are on AND seeing each other.

Make sure you are sharing at least one folder on the laptop,desktop,
or both. Otherwise you have nothing to map.

Right-click My Network Places, and select Map Drive. The rest isn't
too hard to follow; just do what the dialog box asks.
