runs hot. seem like the internal fan doesn't turn on often enough. it gets
so hot I have to raise it off the desk and turn on a fan. sometimes it shuts
down because it is running so hot. is this normal????

Possibly.
That's a hardware thing though..
Have you asked Compaq?

Have you looked into the laptop cooler devices?

Yup.

You can purchase special stands for laptops that have additional
cooling fans built in. These help. Here are some examples:

Good luck

very helpful. thanks for your reply. I didn't know that it was normal.
could it damage the insides though, when it gets that hot?

ROTFLMAO..

One would require a larger bag than the Victorinox WebRecruit Plus.. and
imagine going through security at a courthouse or someplace similar.. one
laptop, one USB light, one USB web cam, one USB notebook mouse, one USB
illuminated notebook mousepad, one USB cooling tray, one power brick plus
power cable plus international adapter, one external USB drive and housing
pkus power brick plus power cable and international adapter, one USB cooling
tray, two powered 4 port USB hubs, ten batteries..

That may be normal, but you would have to contact the manufacturer to
determine if it is normal or not.
Check in a Compaq newsgroup and see others with that model have that issue.

Some laptops have BIOS updates for that and other issues.
Check with the manufacturer BEFORE considering updating the BIOS.

The number of times my cooling pad has been x-rayed, swabbed, examined, etc
I cannot believe each time I take it through McCarran Airport each screener
tells me they have no idea what it is. ("But you did this last week" means
nothing) Once in a blue moon, we sail through with no hassles. The rest of
the time, I might as well check in early because it will take it that long
to get out the other end. It's not like there are an infinite number of TSA
agents at the C Gates but it seems like it.

It's just a standard Antec device, but it might as well be alien as far as
they're concerned. Sigh. I'm just sick and tired of explaining that it's a
Toshiba P4 notebook and without a cooling pad it will overheat in about 5-10
minutes and shut down. I feel like screaming, it's a cheap plastic box with
2 fans in it, but it won't do any good whatsoever, so I just smile and roll
my eyes while I go through the whole rigmarole with that one device yet
again.

Last flight I forgot to sacrifice my lighter which stayed in my pocket.
They swabbed the cooler but didn't even detect the lighter.

Did you enable Cool n' Quiet? You go to Power Schemes, and set it to
Minimal Power Management. This will enable the Cool n' Quiet functions and
should solve your problem.
