Laptop restarts - wont shut down?

Hi

I have just changed the laptop over to XPpro sp2 (was ME). It all updated,
and has been virus and malware scanned - all clean.

When I use shut down from the menu it restarts. I have to hold down the
power button to make it stay down.

Also just before the last screen there is a message in blue writing on a
dark screen. I'm not quick enough to read it. How do I get it to hold for
long enough to read, I've tried pause and it didnt help.

(

Sounds like the computer is ending with a BSOD, and it's set to reboot
automatically on errors, hence the restart. Login to windows. Right click
My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Settings (Under Startup and
Recovery). Untic the box to automatically restart on error.

Now if the computer errors on turning it off, it should stop at the blue
screen and display the message. Copy it down verbatim. First step is to
research the stop code here:

http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm

Also look in the logs in Event Viewer for any error messages.

Have you updated all the drivers with XP SP2 compatible drivers from the
laptop manufacturer's web site?

Just to add, a BIOS update may be in order with the new OS. It may
resolve some OS migration issues. Look for one from the manufacturer.

Bios upgrades can help with compatibility issues with New OS/New
hardware on an older machine.

I think you meant to reply to the OP, not me. I'm not the one with the
question.

Thanks for your reply and Paulmd as well.

I have the drivers from Sony (its a vaio) and my next step would be to
update those but I didnt want to proceed when there was a glitch. I like a
clean install to be perfect ( I expect too much I know). I used to put the
drivers on just after WU but these days its a case of getting the anti
virus/malware stuff on quickly.

The message (now revealed) is moaning about software/hardware updates.

There is an XP bios upgrade available which I had intended to do first, but
it slipped my mind. Getting forgetful these days. Tempus fugit.

)
