A fresh XP SP2 install on a Gateway E3600 P4 desktop ended up with laptop
power settings instead of desktop settings and the machine is randomly
powering down a couple times a day. Hibernate and suspend are disabled and
the BIOS settings appear good. Any ideas?

The first question, is it powering itself down using a normal shutdown or
just turning off like a power loss?

Like a power loss.

You are presumably blue-screening, and you are set to the default of
rebooting whenever that happens. Right-click My Computer, and choose
Properties. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
Under System failure, uncheck the box "Automatically restart.

Now when the problem occurs again, instead of restarting, you will get the
blue screen with diagnostic information. Post back with those details
(especially the stop code) for more help.

As it turns out, this may be an UPS issue, only I experienced it once while
with the client and there was no audible indication from the UPS that it was
the source of the problem (no beeps). Frankly, I didn't even think to look at
the status lights and for this I'm somewhat embarrassed. This doesn't,
however, explain why the power settings installed for a laptop (it's not on
the mobile power scheme). The two issues appear to be unrelated at this point
in the game and I thank you good people for your prompt responses in helping
me resolve this issue.
