Laptop overheats on battery

I have an HP Pavilion zd7010us. It is a P-IV with 1.25 GB, 60 GB HD, 17"
wide screen. I have had the unit for about 2.5 years but in the past 6-12
months I have been having overheating and shutdown problems. I have
narrowed it down to it happening when I am on battery power or more
specifically when the speedstep technology kicks in.

Up until recently I had the power scheme set to MAX Battery which caused the
fans to run really fast at very odd times like when using Word just to write
a memo (no graphics, no OLE, nothing special) or emailing or light
spreadsheets. Now that I have the power scheme set to Always On it happens
very rarely, but still enough to be annoying and I don't get good battery
life.

If I have the laptop plugged in with an Always On scheme and working for
hours the fans are low and the CPU temp is around 105-112 F. It seems like
within minutes of unplugging the power when I have a scheme other than
Always On the fans kick in and the CPU goes up to ~135 F. I assumed that
when the laptop goes on battery CPU power and fan speed would drop, but it
seems the opposite is happening here.

If I really want to jack up the CPU temp to cause the shutdown I only need
to plug and unplug the laptop every 10 minutes or so. The CPU temp and fan
speed do not kick down when toggling. They just increase.

You need to contact HP tech support for repair and replacement. This is
not something you can fix yourself. It probably has a bad charger board
which is a component on the motherboard.
