Laptop/Notebook power problem

Since last night I've had a problem getting my laptop to charge.

I leave it plugged in for most of the time and it used to show the green
light as being completely charged. Last night I noticed while still on
ac power that the critical warning came on and the icon for being on ac
was gone and the battery with the red x popped up. Well I continued to
fool around with the cord until it finally showed it was charging again
and then I went to bed.

When I got on the computer this morning it only lasted about 5 minutes
before shutting down due to lack of power. I played with the cord for a
few minutes and finally got it up and working again. I watched as the
battery indicator got up to 5% charged and it just crashed again. This
time I can't get it up at all. When plugged into the ac it still
doesn't recognize it and the yellow charging light won't come on.

I've tried different plugs to no avail. Any ideas what the problem
could be??

I have a Presario X1000 running windows XP Home. Thanks.

The power jack on your motherboard has probably failed. This is fairly
common on laptops. If you are good with electronics, you can probably
get a replacement jack on eBay and solder it onto the board.
Otherwise, you will have to send it to HP/Compaq. They will replace
the motherboard, which is typically $300-$400.

Thanks for your help. Could it also possibly be the ac adapter has
failed?? Again, thanks.

"I've tried different plugs to no avail."

I thought that meant that you have tried a different adapter.

That would be the first thing that I would look at. You should be able
to test the DC output voltage with a voltmeter to make sure that you
are getting output.
