laptop microphone not working

i have a laptop with built-in microphone

Control Panel>Sound>Recording reports 'working' - but it isn't

I'm sure it was working until i plugged in a headset (including mic)

Any clues?

go back there in the control panel and right click on the mic of the laptop
and select default....

you can only have one mic working at a time

There is only one mic (built-in one i assume) showing since I unplugged
headset
