A question about laptop memory configuration. The laptop is an Acer
Extensa 5620 with 2 DDR2 516MB(not sure about the HZ) chips
installed. Can one replace ONE 516 chip with a 2GB 667MHZ

Thanks,

Yes but you will get better performance using matching pairs of
memory.Your system supports dual
channel memory which boost performance by 10-15% by installing matched
pairs of memory.I would install 2gig(2x1gig sticks) of DDR2 667
memory.Remove and retain the old memory for backup.

It is probably cheaper to purchase 2x1GB and simply remove the
2x512MB you currently have.

If you mix a 2GB module and a 512MB module, for a total of 2.5GB
of memory, the memory will run in single channel mode. For the
sake of an addition 512MB of memory, it'll run slower by a bit.

Using 2x1GB memory, will give a total of 2GB, and run in dual
channel mode. That is the option I'd choose.

The 1GB module is $48, and two of those is $96. If you buy a
single 2GB module, the price is $143. So there is a premium
for the denser memory.

If you go with 2x2GB configuration, that will help the performance
of Vista by a bit, but you won't get all of the promised memory.
According to the Microsoft KB, they mention "3.12GB" as the
amount you might see available with Vista 32 bit version.
For WinXP, I don't see a good reason to install that much memory -
2x1GB should be plenty. (Vista is more aggressive in using vacant RAM for
caching of various types.)

So those are your choices.
