Laptop HDD Recovery

Having just heard by Laptop hard drive slow to a horrible grinding halt, I
have a slight problem in that there is a lot of info I would like to get off
it. I managed to get back onto it, by removing it from the laptop and
accessing the HDD by putting into an external USB HDD casing and then
switching it on. I got another couple of MB off it (I am up to about 5% of
what I need recovered.

The noise it is making is a grinding noise, and you can hear the disks
slowing down (due to friction) as the spindles fail. It then fires up again
and tries again, but the laptop cannot read them...

It's a Toshiba HDD, which the date Recovery guy actually guessed!!! Is
there a message here?

I can spend £700 or so to get it recovered from a data recovery company, or
can I try my hand at HDD recovery.

I have a spare HDD that I can use. I was wondering if anyone has ever tried
this and what my chances of success are? I am thinking of opening it up and
trying to place the platters into another HDD and see if that works. Am I
going to kill it by doing this?

Should I just bite the bullet and pay the money???

Any ideas/suggestions/thoughts appreciated.

You are going to kill it. That just won't work. Once a
mechanical failing has progressed to this point, all one can
do is try cooling it (place in freezer in ziplock bag for a
few hours) and try it cold. Even that may further risk
data, the less you use it the greater the odds of recovery
by a professional... depending on what exactly is wrong.
