laptop finger pad vs mouse

I am trying to deactivate the finger touch pad, since I am using a mouse, so
that when I type the slightest bump of my thumb near the pad doesn't cause my
curser to jump to someplace else. Does anyone know how to turn this pad off?

Have you tried looking in the manual, or for an icon in the notification
area (system tray.. bottom right of your screen)..

This depends on the touch pad that you have. On my computer (with a
Synaptics TouchPad), I go to:

Control Panel->Mouse->Device Settings->(select touchpad)->Settings

Look at the top row of keys, and the icons in blue if you find one
that looks like a mouse (touchpad) press the FN + that key
