laptop battery questions

A battery related question just popped up in the discussion with
fellow laptop users which we want some clarification from experts
here
Now we would like to know
1) Does the laptop battery needs to be almost drained before its
plugged in for recharging?
2) Is there a difference in battery longevity if its charged while the
laptop is not in operating condition ( or In dormant- closed state) or
while you are using it?
3) Supposing the battery was recharged just halfway of the total
capacity and then charged intermittently when used, would it help
depreciate the battery more than by being overcharged due being
forgotten in while being connected to the charging line?
4) What would be the optimum charging temperature of the laptop
batteries for charging?
5) Supposing we have two batteries that are already depleted and we
can charge one unit only at a time is there a similar device a sort
of a dock where we can connect the batter y to replenish it juice?
6) Now what is the rate of self discharge of a fully juiced up laptop
battery; say it was fully charged lately ( 100%) and surely when the
laptop is run a day after the battery indicator will show that the
juice is less than 100 percent.
7) How about if the laptop is connected to the docking station, does
it automatically charge the battery and would it not affect the
lifespan of the particular laptop battery if its continuously plugged
in the docking station/port replicator attachment?
8) Are there any online information source for the seldom known
aspects of notebook b atteries?
There are other questions that I can’t remember during the discussion
that I forgot but answers to those mentioned above would be
interesting …

There have been at least three major technologies used in laptop batteries.
There have been a near-infinite number of laptop manufacturers and models.
The answers to your questions depend on both of these factors -- there is
no general answer.

So could you elaborate on what factors does my questions apply?
