Tom

Just got a new laptop with the restore disk type software not an install
disk.

Questions are as follows:

Would a reload from a XP Pro Corp upgrade it?

If it would not upgrade it would a full install have what it needs to run?

Shouldn't it with XP Home under Display, Appearance, Advanced give me a
selection of fonts to pick from?

Thanks

Tom

You can upgrade with a retail XP upgrade or Full version or use a Volume
License if you or your company has purchased a block of VL licenses. There
is no such thing as a Pro Corp. The Pro Corp is a pirated version of the VL.
The OEM versions [sometimes referred to as full] will only do clean
installs. You cannot use thee OEM version to upgrade.
I believe you can select a different font for everything but desktop from
Appearance> Advanced.

Will an OEM Copy of Pro have everthing needed to run a laptop in it? Since
its the cheapest to buy? Or am I screwed and need to upgrade because of the
restore disk that came from Toshiba? I can qualify for a Academic upgrade
if an OEM won't work as I am back in college.

The issue with laptops is they are proprietary for drivers. Check the
manufacturer's web site information on whether it can run under XP and
for any SP2 drivers. Otherwise an OEM copy will work, just that it
cannot do an upgrade - just a full install.

Tom

Get the academic FULL retail version.
I would suggest you prep you system for a clean install and then do an
upgrade. With laptops, the upgrade is usually the safest route to take to
make sure the correct drivers and laptop functions remain intact.

Tom

Sorry I didn't look back at your original post - that the laptop already
has XP Home on it, so it's not really a drivers' issue. Disregard my post.

Let me be clarify your suggestion.

Step 1 fresh OEM restore

Step 2 XP Pro Academic edtion upgrade

I don't understand what you are clarifying from your clarification, but your
best choice would be the Academic !!!!""""FULL"""!!!! XP Pro version.
!!!!NOT!!!! the Academic upgrade. Unless you have a Win 95/98/Me/NT4/2000 CD
to use for the upgrade qualifier and you want to do a clean install, you
will not be able to do so with the upgrade. Your Toshiba restore disks would
mean you would have to restore back to the original configuration if you
wanted to reinstall using the XP upgrade. I am giving this recommendation
because of the deep academic discounts for XP Pro full version.

Thanks Mike

understand ya now *_*

So a full install should have most drivers I need. And Toshiba website will
have any non-standard ones.(at least enough to be up and running) I already
looked there. Just to be sure I'll download and burn them to CD before I
start. Would hate to get 1/2 way done and then have ta stop to got get one.
Thanx again

A full install, would NOT probably have most of the Toshiba drivers, and is
why I suggest a upgrade over Home using the FULL retail version. The FULL
version will allow you to use all the options from a clean install, upgrade,
repair etc. where a upgrade would require a qualifier to accomplish the
same.
