Laptop and wireless network

I have a laptop with built in wireless technology and a wireless router in
the house. I also have hardwire connections around the house for the
network. When I turn on the laptop I immediately link with the wireless
network. Somtimes I would like to hardwire the connection to the laptop
instead of using the wireless connection. However, the laptop always
connects to the wireless connection. How can I disable the wireless
connection in the laptop to connect to the hardwire connection?

Thanks in advance,

Just plug it into the wired lan - there's no particular problem having both
connected. You should see the faster connection (wired) being used. If
not, disable the wireless by right clicking My Network Places, select
Properties, and right click the wireless connection, choose Disable. Use
the same method to Enable it later when you need it.
(You can also get there via Control Panel/Network Connections)

Also check your laptop's manual for a key combination to disable wireless -
my Gateway M275 has one.

Many laptops have automatic switching software: if I plug in the
ethernet connection on my Toshiba laptop, the wireless connection
automatically is disabled and the 100MB wired connection enabled,
using "ConfigFree" software. If I unplug the ethernet, the wireless
reconnects at 11MB automatically.

If yours doesn't do that, can you just turn the wireless off when you
connect the ethernet? My Toshiba has a switch on the LHS to turn off
the radio. (I don't use it as it turns off my bluetooth too)
