Language issue

I recently enabled the Greek language service in Windows XP SP2. The language
bar is enabled and everything works properly - until I use IE 6.0. Although
the Language Bar is set to use English, if I visit a site that provides
internationalization (such as many microsoft sites), the site will default to
Greek.

I checked IEs language facility and found that Greek was the only language
enabled, so I added English and moved it into first position. The site
correctly displayed English when I visited the same site.

If I then changed the Language Bar setting to Greek and visited the site, I
still got English. To get Greek on the site, I again had to change IEs
setting to Greek to get the desired results.

My question: "Is this a bug or is this by design, and is there a
workaround?" It does not make sense if this is by design.

Hi wschlichtman :)

Try the following and see it that helps:

Check the Encoding is set to Greek

Got to Tools>View>Encoding>select greek

also....

How To Add and Enable Additional Languages in Windows

Then go to the Languages tab and make sure that the language you want is in
the list, and at the top of the list. If it's not there, install it. If
it's not at the top, move it to the top of the list, then click OK and close
IE.

Hope this helps :)

In IE go to View...Encoding - toggle the Auto-Select checkmark and see if
that helps.

Hello,

The behavior you observed is by design. While the language bar controls the
active keyboard layout, the language setting in IE controls the prefered
language on websites. Some webservers (like micosoft.com) take this setting
into account and display the content in the user's (prefered) language.

Thank you Viktor. This is what I was looking for. Although I understand what
MS was thinking here, it would be helpful, and more useful, if the Language
Bar aided in determining what was displayed in IE. There should at least be
an option to allow the user to select which way it should work. Again, thank
you.
