landscape section does not allow me to fully utilize the page widt

I am using Word 2003.
I have a template for a doc which a customer gave me. There must be
something they set that is causing the following problem because it does not
occur in any doc created using the NORMAL template.

I created a section in the middle of the document and set that section to
landscape. The "paper" turns as I would expect it to. But when I try to
create a table or insert a picture, even though the ruler shows the right
margin to be where I expect it (at 10"), anything that extends beyond 7.5"
simply disappears. It is as though Word is seeing the page as only being
8.5" wide when we know that the landscape is indeed setting it to 11".

Since it does not produce the same results in a new doc based on the Normal
template, I am assuming there is something set in this template that is
causing the problem. But I will be danged if I can find it - I have checked
everything in Page Setup and Tools/Options - no luck.

Suggestions would be greatly appreciated! This is a long doc and I do not
want to reinvent the wheel by recreating the template.

Thanks.

Go to Format | Columns. Make sure "Whole document" is selected for "Apply
to" and click on the preset picture for One (even if one column is already
selected), then OK.

Wow! I must admit, my initial reaction was "you have got to be kidding -
columns??" but it solved the problem. Amazing! I would love to know how you
figured out the columns were the culprits!

Well, *I* didn't figure it out. I think that honor goes to our top sleuth,
Beth Melton. But there's a bug in some versions of Word that results in/from
Word's failure to check the "Equal column width" box in the Columns dialog.
Word then sometimes gets confused and thinks it has a column of a set width
narrower than the margin width. Worse still, occasionally it thinks it has
two or more columns, the first of which is margin width, leaving no room for
the rest, so that text just disappears at the end of the first column!

BTW, thanks for giving me the benefit of the doubt and trying the suggestion
even if it sounded whacky. <g>
