I'm using a new Sony desktop and a Toshiba laptop connected via a cat 5e
crossover, both running XP Home. I have run the connection wizard on
both (more than once), first on the Sony and designated it as the one to
connect to the I'net with. The connections show up in both system trays
at 100 Mbps. On the Sony in My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft
Windows Network, Home(name of workgroup), both Sony(name of desktop) and
Toshiba2(name of laptop) show up. Home shows subfolders. If I click on
Toshiba2 I get the message: "\\Toshiba2 is not accessible. You might not
have permission to use this resource. Contact administrator etc. The
network path was not found."

On the Toshiba, in My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows
Network, only Home(name of workgroup) shows up (although at one time I
did see Toshiba2). If I click on Home I get the same message as in
previous paragraph, only starting with "Home is not accessible...". I'm
new at the LAN business. I plan to use the connection mainly to transfer
files from one unit to the other.

Thanks for any help.

Make sure you have the same user account and password set up on both
computers. Make sure any firewalls you have allow lan passage. Make
sure you've shared out resources as appropriate. Here are some links to
help you with networking:
