Hi everyone,

I'm pretty clueless to networking matters, so i've finally decided to
get some usefull help.
I currently have two xp pro machines and a switch.
Ipconfig shows on both machines a unique ip address, but i'm unable to
ping one another (fw disabled). I've tried running the network wizard
but i'm a bit lost as it mentions rather internet connections.
And lthough i've tried a few options (probably th wrong ones) it
didn't help me further,

thanks in advance,

Paul

Hi there Paul,

Networking is mostly easy enough do do but sometimes
proves to be difficult. Firstly you need to make sure you
have the correct type of Cat5 cables, As you are using a
switch you we need two straight through cables (one to
each machine), then you will need to be sure that the
L.E.D'S on the rear of the NIC's (Network interface card)
are lit and the corresponing L.E.D's on the switch are
also lit. once you have done the above you then need to
move on to configuring the network.

Machine A and Machine both need to be configured.

Machine A - Open up the properties for the network
connection and open up the internet protocol TCP/IP
properties - Make sure that you enter a unique ip address
I.E 192.168.1.1
with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

Machine B - Open up the properties for the network
connection and open up the internet protocol TCP/IP
properties - Make sure that you enter a unique ip address
I.E 192.168.1.2
with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

You can leave the default gateway and DNS server blank as
you dont want share the internet connection. so by doing
the above should be enough to configure the network. you
will still need to do a few more things before you are
ready to go.

You will need togive each machine a unique name I.E
Machine A and Machine B, you will also need to give them
botha workgroup name which needs to be the same on both
computers I.E Office Network.
This should just about do it and the netowrk should work
and they should be able to ping each and access network
shares.

If you need any more help please dont hesitate to ask.

Hi there Paul,

Hi Aaron, thanks for helping me out here

i currently use cable modem on both computers; so i imagine i'm using
the right cables.
Machine A and Machine both need to be configured.

Machine A - Open up the properties for the network

properties - Make sure that you enter a unique ip address
I.E 192.168.1.1
with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

done.
btw, when opening the properties i get either 'obtain an ip address
automatically' on the 'general' tab, in that case an 'alternate
configuration ' tab appears where i can enter my ip address, or
should i use the 'use the following ip address' on the 'general' tab ?

Machine B - Open up the properties for the network
connection and open up the internet protocol TCP/IP
properties - Make sure that you enter a unique ip address
I.E 192.168.1.2
with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0
done

ahum......
i can change the computer name, but the workgroup name is greyed and
it says i need to install networking before i can change domain name
This should just about do it and the netowrk should work
and they should be able to ping each and access network
shares.

If you need any more help please dont hesitate to ask.

with the above changes (except cpter name and workgroup) still request
timed out;
thanks for taking yr time.
