I crashed my system and had to restore drive C. Among other things, my
LAN quit working. This computer's name is Kenneth (this one crashed). The
other computer on the LAN is Bernard.

Both drive C and the registry were restored from very recent backups when
the LAN was working fine

Neither computer can see the other in Network Neighborhood

Router seems to be working

XP Home firewall is turned off on both machines.

Currently set Kenneth Master Browser Yes, Bernard No. Also tried both as
Auto and both No.

I read on the web to access Control/Panel/Administrative Tools/Services and
set Computer Browser to Stopped and changed Startup Type to Disabled (was
Automatic) in Kenneth. (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=
204969)

Bernard can see its own drives and folders in Network Neighborhood when I
click on Folders (Control Panel).

Kenneth cannot see its own drives and folders in Network Neighborhood when
I click on Folders (Control Panel). Drives are set to be shared. It shows
an icon for MSHOME but I cannot use that to see the computers in the
workgroup - says I do not have permission. I think this may be my main
problem?

From Kenneth I can ping Kenneth but not Bernard

From Bernard I can ping Bernard but not Kenneth

I didn't change any hardware or cabling

I ran the XP network wizard

I have a copy of all the network property settings from before the crash
and they are the same

Tried turning off firewall (Tiny Personal Firewall, version 2.0.15A).

Both use MSHOME for workgroup name.

HELP!

I suspect this is something simple.

With regard to this:

I am the only user on my XP Home machine (Kenneth). There is no
Adminstrator. This is the XP Home default. When the machine boots it
shows my desktop.

Have you reset Sharing on the one that crashed? Repairing XP would hvae
turned them all off so perhaps you simply need to set the sharing where you
need it.

I just double-checked. Yes, all hard drives are set to share on both
Kenneth and Bernard.

Curious, didn't see you mention it, but can either PC ping the router??
Seems that one PC cannot ping the other. If singnals are going to the router,
and not to one another, I would take another look at the firewall.

If you cannot ping the router, then it's another problem altogether.

Ken,

Turning off a firewall isn't always productive. And there are a few more
security settings that might be relevant.

You could look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, and
diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow
instructions precisely (download browstat!):

Sorry. I misspoke. It's not a router; it's a Netgear EN104 Ethernet Hub.
AFAIK it's not pingable.
