LAN intermittent problems

I'm still having intermittent LAN connection problems. The past week or
two I've been turning on the Master Browser machine first by several
minutes and it seemed to help LAN reliablity. But yesterday and this
morning it was down again. I pulled one of the cables out of the hub and
moved it to another socket. Immediately it started working - for how long
I don't know.

This happened once before (different socket) and cured the problems for a
while.

Think it's the hub? Cable(s)? Maybe I should buy a new hub and cables?
Coincidence? Thoughts?

Is there a way to connect two LANs without a hub (RJ-45 connectors)? Like
a modem eliminator cable but for LANs? I only have two machines (XP Home)
on the LAN.

Ken,

If your problem is intermittent, and if it improves by moving the connection to
another hub port, maybe the problem is indeed a failing hub.

If you have just two computers, a cross-over cable can replace two straight-thru
cables and a hub. Hubs are cheap, though, and powered ones have lights that can
diagnose some connectivity issues.
