File and Printer Sharing Problem

There are two computers on my LAN and I used to have no problem accessing
shared files from one computer to the other but then I had to reformat
because I got a virus and now I cannot see shared files between computers and
I cannot print from the secondary computer. The main computer is connected
to the printer and to a five port hub. The hub is then connected to a
digital cable modem. The secondary computer is connected to the hub as well.

1. with command prompt program run : ipconfig<enter> on both computer
2. both must be have same Subnet Mask
3. both must not have same IP Address, usualy the last digit not the same

Example IP 192.168.0.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0

and IP 192.168.0.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0

4. If OK go to control panel - choose SYSTEM
5. go to Computer Name (tab)
6. go to Change (button)
7. set the same workgroup for both computer

Chester,

It might be good to know exactly what error message or problem you're seeing
when you "cannot see shared files".

Is this really a hub (make and model would be good here)? Are you paying for 2
connections from the ISP? If so, you'll need a very unique configuration.

If you have a router (not a hub) the most common cause of this problem would be
a misconfigured or overlooked personal firewall, or other security component.
There are several other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your
problem.

You could look at "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", "net config server",
and "net config workstation", from each computer, so we can diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions
precisely (download browstat!):

It says 5 port hub on the bottom and it is from linksys. I also checked and
the computers are under different subnet masks, one is 255
255.254.0 and the other is 255.255.252.0 and we are paying for two ip
addresses from our isp. As of this post I have not read chucks help articles
but I will check into those.
