Windows XP lan icon only shows when disconnected

My lan icon only shows in the tool bar when the ethernet cable is disconnected.
 
This is a recent change, for the 5 years I've had this computer it would show the icon when it was connected as well as when it was disconnected. I'm having other problems with the lan as well. I asked this question to see if it was indicative of any thing.
 
I suppose it would depend on what type of problems you are having with your network connection.
