LAN connection, but not shared internet connection

Hello,

I'm running 2 W2K machines connected via a 3COM LAN. Up until recently I
operated successfully on the LAN and was able to share the internet
connection. Something has changed and I can no longer access the internet
from the client - ideas ?

I have tried de-installing and re-installing the Firewalls - no luck !
I have used static and automatic IP addresses - no luck !
I have installed the latest updates to check if the master browser was
hijacked - no luck !

The message I get from the client "event viewer" is "The master browser has
received a server announcement from the computer COMPUTER that believes that
it is the master browser for the domain on transport
NetBT_Tcpip_{D6E66943-33BE-4255-. The master browser is stopping or an
election is being forced. "
From the host I get "The browser was unable to retrieve a list of servers
from the browser master \\SECOND on the network
\Device\Nbf_{7FC06299-8B4B-48CF-8FDA-5A583C12AA4E}. The data is the error
code."

Grateful for any ideas.

master browser has no thing to do with the internet access. can you ping a public IP like 4.2.2.1? if yes, can you ping yahoo.com?

this may help, how to troubleshoot internet access issues

Thanks for the assistance Robert.
Seems I might be having a problem with the host machine. Althought the 2
Pcs talk to each other, the host can't ping it's own IP/IP name - it can
however ping client. The client can ping everything.
I've swapped the slot position of the Network card and de-installed and
re-installed the driver, but this hasn't alleviated the problem. Are my IP
settings OK or am I on the wrong path altogether ?
I didn't have a problem until recently, so I tend to think I may have
installed an update that's upset the whole show or I'm the lucky recipient of
Spyware - ideas ?

assuming both machine can't access the internet, the problem is they don't have default gateway and DNS.

the Host accesses the internet without any problem. It's only the host that
doesn't.
